The National Wallace Monument stands atop the Abbey Craig near Stirling. Work was begun in 1861, when 80,000 people turned out to see the foundation stone being laid! It stands 220ft high. It overlooks the site of the Battle of Stirling Bridge. Its premier exhibit is the "Wallace Sword." The monument is held in great affection by the people of Scotland, as is the memory of the man himself.
