Sir John was one of Wallace’s faithful companions, but was slain at the Battle of Falkirk in 1298. It is said Wallace shed tears over the body.
He was buried here in Falkirk churchyard. The original stone has been replaced several times over the centuries, each lying atop its predecessor.
Another of Wallace’s band, Sir John Stewart is also buried at Falkirk.
